Volunteers are at the heart of the success of the Nevada Diabetes Association’s programs. Each month the NDA will spotlight a volunteer for exemplary service through the presentation of the “Emerald of Excellence” Award. Congratulations to Paul Sweeney for being the recipient of this award for March! Thank you for your dedication to the NDA!
Paul was in the very first CIT program led by Tandy McGee. Those also with him in the program at the time are some of our key members to this day. It is because of this that he feels so strongly about making these programs the very best!
Paul was diagnosed at a year old in 1980 after he was sent home with the flu at a previous doctor’s visit and returned in severe DKA with a scary couple of days to follow. Fast forward some years, he went to one of the first diabetes camps at age 7, and has been a proponent of the camp programs ever since!

Paul absolutely says, “Without question, that the programs provided to me as a child changed my life, not only as a better diabetic with more current and up to date knowledge received from professionals and peers, but as a leader in life.”
He has mentioned that he continues relationships with “damn near all that attend because more importantly, they will do the same for each other in the future”.

Last but not least in our conversation with Paul.. He mentioned that someone still needs to start a “Go Fund Me” for Magalina…. PR4P FOR LIFE!

Thank you Paul for being an exemplary volunteer. We truly your dedication.

Q1 : Please share one fun fact about yourself and how you became involved with the NDA.
I was diagnosed at a year old in 1980. I was sent home with the flu at a previous doctor’s visit and returned in severe DKA with a scary couple of days to follow. I went to one of the first diabetes camps at age 7, and have been a proponent of the camp programs ever since. I was in the very first CIT program led by Tandy McGee. Those with me at the time are some of our key members to this day. It is because of this that I feel so strongly about making these programs the very best!
Q2: What is your favorite part about being an NDA volunteer?
I can absolutely say without question that the programs provided to me as a child changed my life, not only as a better diabetic with more current and up to date knowledge received from professionals and peers, but as a leader in life. I continue relationships with damn near all that attend and more importantly, they will do the same for each other in the future.
Q3: Briefly share one of your memorable experiences at camp:
I have way too many great experiences to share from my days at camp and plan to make many more! But I will say that someone still needs to start a “Go Fund Me” for Magalina….
PR4P FOR LIFE!
