Making the decision to send a child to summer camp for the first time is a significant choice for any parent. When diabetes is added to the equation, the decision can become even more daunting and stressful for families. Parents of children with type 1 diabetes often share common concerns with all parents – Will my child monitor their blood sugar? Can the camp staff effectively manage my child’s diabetes? Is summer camp a suitable option for my child? The resounding answer to all these questions is a definite yes.

Camp Buck Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to live in Reno to go to Camp Buck?

A: No. Anyone can attend Camp Buck. We even fly 60 individuals(campers, med staff, counselors) from Las Vegas to camp! If you can get to camp, you can go to camp!

What is the
cost of camp?

A: Camp Buck costs $850 or $1,000 with travel on the group flight from Las Vegas.

Camp is costly, I really want to send my child, what can I do?

A: Every single child deserves camp! We have scholarships and payment assistance plans in place to make this possible. No camper will ever be denied camp for financial reasons.

What’s included in the price?

A: For the price of camp your camper will receive – food and lodging, 24/7 medical care, routine diabetes supplies(insulin, blood glucose monitoring), lifelong friendships, and a new diabetes family community.

Do I need to provide my own diabetes supplies?

A: Yes & no. We provide all diabetes supplies outside of durable medical equipment(pumps, cgms). That means all insulin, blood glucose testing supplies, and low treatment.

Is my camper safe,
who is caring for them?

A: Campers are cared for by licensed medical staff, licensed dietary staff and trained clinical counselors (same as a school nurse). Camp is the time for campers to be kids. We handle all the diabetes, campers do not dose or administer insulin themselves without medical staff.

How do you monitor campers overnight?

A:  All campers are tested at midnight and 2:00 AM. Campers on
Dexcom and Abbott CGM systems are monitored 24/7 on a large dashboard powered by ViewsEMR.
Staff will be monitoring this screen from the time evening activities end until breakfast.
