Teen Camp, a three-day resident camp held at Lake Tahoe, is just around the corner and we need your help to make it a great success!

Diabetes camps and why they matter

The experience at Teen Camp (October 25-27) addresses the unique needs of teens ages 12-17 living with diabetes. Teens are able to discover their affinity group, understand they are not alone, and gain an invaluable sense of belonging and camaraderie. As teens near adulthood, it is important they believe they can “own” their care and be confident in themselves and their health habits and decisions. Most campers feel marginalized in their lives as they are usually the only Type 1’s in their classes. Our Tahoe Teen Camp becomes their only avenue to forge friendships with other children affected by diabetes. Diabetes camps give participants agency, making campers feel seen, heard, and understood.

The lifesaving role and goal of Nevada Diabetes Association’s Teen Camp is to be the greatest resource for teens, offering them the opportunity to build resilience, gain independence, and forge lasting connections with peers who understand their unique challenges. These camps are not just a reprieve from the daily demands of diabetes management; they are a vital component of the continuum of care for young people living with diabetes.

This year’s camp is wrapped up in a Halloween-themed program featuring spooky haunted houses, a Hollywood whodunit murder mystery dinner party, costume contest and dance, smores on the beach, hot air balloon rides, and other surprises. And, of course, wrapped up in all this fun, is robust diabetes education programming, where nutrition, exercise, self-management, and specialized topics related to diabetes are presented.
